March 13th 2002 - AIT held its first Slide Talk: 'ASIA-AFRICA: CONTEMPORARY ART' with David Elliott, Fumio Nanjo and Roger McDonald. Roger McDonald showed slides from his research trip to Sri Lanka and Bangaldesh, Fumio Nanjo spoke about his research visits to Mumbai, Bandon and Shanghai and First Director of The Mori Art Museum David Elliott gave a slide talk on African contemporary art, charting its many threads from the 1950s to the present day.

June 18th 2002 - Slide Talk by WHITNEY BIENNALE 2002 Curator Lawrence Rinder at The Audio Visual Hall, Tokyo International Forum. Curator of The Whitney Biennale 2002 Lawrence Rinder gave a slide talk about the Biennale and his curating. At The Audio-Visual Hall, The Tokyo International Forum. 7pm - 9pm. This was the first time he had given a public talk in Tokyo. AIT staff Yasu Nakamori interpreted. About 130 people attended.

MAD MIX 1 - JULY 13th, 2002 8PM - LATE, AIT ROOM. The first MAD MIX, where all MAD students and AIT friends are welcome to come. Bar and DJ. This has now developed into MINGLIUS.

JULY 20th, 2002 8pm - 4am RADIO NIGHT at Radio:On. A radio night in collaboration with art group eyesaw. 40 minute shows were hosted LIVE by eyesaw and AIT curators as well as invited guest DJs. Interviews with artists and curators, diverse musics and chat. Radio:On is 3 minutes walk from Gaiemmae crossing, Tokyo and is a bar with a Radio Booth in one corner. FREE admission. DJ's - Fumihiko Sumitomo, Junko Shimada (Director, Gallery Side 2), Roger.

JULY 27th, 2002 6pm - 8pm THINKING ABOUT DOCUMENTA II. At Spiral, Aoyama, Tokyo. AIT staff Kai Ozawa and Fumihiko Sumitomo who went to the opening of Documenta led a discussion in Japanese about the themes and works in this year's exhibition. Guests: Fumio Nanjo (Deputy Director Mori Art Museum) and Kentaro Ichihara (art critic) Space for 100 people. AIT intern Yuko Shindo co-ordinated this event. (in JAPANESE) ¥1200 with one drink.

August 9th, 2002 7-30pm - 9-30pm ARTISTS TALK by Nina Fischer & Marouni el Sani. Now working on their first documentary work in Tokyo, these Berlin based artists have recently participated in The Sydney Biennale 2002,The Gwangju Biennale 2002 and Manifesta 2002. They work with video, photography and installations. (in ENGLISH with consecutive translation to Japanese by Roger McDonald). ¥1000 with one drink. Music and bar after the talk. In AIT Room.

September 22nd, 2002 MEK YA ROK club night - Club ACID Tokyo, Shinjuku. AIT's first all nighter in collaboration with top Tokyo Break Beats DJ, DUCK ROCK (recently remixed John Spencer Blues Explosion, BUZZ night regular). Other DJ's - Hidekick, Dai Ando, Roger. Visuals and video art archives too. 22:00 - 4:30. ¥2000 with 1 drink. Shinjuku 2-3-12 B1F TEL: 03 3352-3338.

September 23rd, 2002 SLIDE TALK by AIT staff Yasufumi Nakamori on Contemporary Art and Copyright Issues. Many examples and images were presented by Yasu, who has considerable experience in this field as a qualified lawyer. Recent examples such as Pierre Huyghe's 'Anne Lee' work were cited and used as a basis for further discussion around the area of the internet and image copyright.

September 29th, 2002 AIT HOUR MUSEUM Sakuragawa School Gymnasium, Shimbashi, Tokyo. 13:00 - 21:00. An eight hour 'museum' for the future. 'Moving Collection' exhibition, Mori Akira's 'Weekender', various DJ's playing Sunday sounds, Video Screening Room showing a program arranged by The Video Art Centre Tokyo and Koki Tanaka, drinks and foods, Library with a Theme offering catalogues and videos on the theme post-war 'avant-garde'. All for ¥500, in the large gymnasium space of this disused school. Over 400 people came and we intend to do it again.

October 21st, 2002 SLIDE TALK 'Thinking and Doing Documenta 11', by Sarat Maharaj. Documenta 11 co-curator and scholar Sarat Maharaj spoke about the core issues which moulded this years Documenta. Showing video and images of Thomas Hirschorn and Multiplicity amongst others, Sarat framed his introduction around two factors: what he called the dominance of the Retinal Age, and the reach of Globalism. In the AIT Room. 19:00 - 21:00, 45 capacity.

November 6th, 2002 - ARTISTS TALK,Canadian based new media artist Nancy Nisbet spoke about her recent works and her interests in surveillance technologies and how they affect our lives and thinking. She recently implanted two microchips into her hands. In the AIT Room. 19:00 - 21:00. 30 people attended.

December 13th, 2002 - ARTISTS TALK, Japanese artist Saki Satom, currently on a one year residency in London, gave a talk about her work. Focusing on the differences she percieved between Japan and the UK in terms of audiences and criticism, Saki introduced her works using slides. In the AIT Room, 19:00 - 21:00. 40 people attended.

January 20, 2003 - CURATORS TALK - Director of IASPIS, Sweden, Karina Ericsson Warn introduced the activities of IASPIS, focusing particularly on their artist/ curator in residence program. Indepedent curator Yukie Kamiya also spoke about her experience at IASPIS last year.. In the AIT Room, 19:00 - 21:00. The talk was in english with consecutve translation by Roger McDonald. 50 people attended.

April 4 - 6, 2003 - AIT SYMPOSIUM AND BOOTH AT NICAF (Nippon International Contemporary Art Festival) AIT organised three symposiums on art education in Japan today, thinking about Asia from within Japan, and a big debate on alternative practices now. Speakers included: artists Masato Nakamura and Navin Rawanchaikul, critic Kentaro Ichihara, editors Tetsuya Ozaki and Takashi Asai, curator Mina Lee, gallerist Atsushi Sugita and lecturer Titus Spree. AIT also made a booth within the art fair showing art works given as gifts to AIT staff with nothing for sale. Tokyo International Forum.

April 18 - 19, 2003 - AIT LINK LAB at POLA Museum Annex, Ginza. First of a new series of public talksbased on the idea of presenting an exhibition via slides and discussion. AIT staff Keisuke Ozawa and Roger McDonald gave two evening talks on the theme of Journey and Paradise, using images of art works and archive pictures. 60 people attended.

April 27, 2003 - AIT SYMPOSIUM 'Off Centre - Contemporary art from Dublin and Tokyo' Darragh Hogan (Director Kerlin Gallery, Dublin), Hozu Yamamoto (Director Tokyo Gallery) and Hideki Aoyama (Deputy Director Mizuma Art Gallery) presented thoughts on current directions in art from Ireland and Japan respectively. Yokohama Portside Gallery.

August 8-9, 2003- AIT Video show at Tokyo Wondersite. Curated by AIT staff Keisuke Ozawa. 'In Different Spaces'.

August 8-9, 2003 - MINGLIUS SOUTH club event in Naha Okinawa. AIT staff Roger McDonald will be DJ'ing and introducing VJ films at The Maejima Art Centre, Naha.

August 19, 2003 - ARTISTS TALK. UK artists Yoke & Zoom, residents at RICE +.

August 27, 2003 - CURATORS TALK by Greg Burke, Director of The Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, New Zealand. Greg showed a rare film of the opening of the museum.

September 30, 2003 - ARTISTS TALK by Christopher Williams (Los Angeles), on the occasion of his exhibition at WAKO Works of Art.

October 11 - November 24, 2003 - "12 Years: Reflections on Artist in Residence", exhibition at Hara Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo. AIT helped organise this initiative begun by Daimler Chrysler Foundation Japan.

October 20, 2003 - ARTISTS TALK by Bjorn Melhus, with video screenings.

November 6th, 2003- AIT symposium 'CHINA BREAKZ', together with The Japan Foundation, at The Japan Foundation International Conference Room in Ark Hills. 5 young curators from China discussed latest developments with a Japanese panel.

November 9th, 2003- 'At Home/ Not At Home', a one day open forum and symposium on recent artist in residence initiatives in Tokyo, organised by AIT and ARCUS. Start 13:00, at Ginza POLA Museum Annex. 8 resident artists showed videos, followed by a big debate (in Japanese). Also taking part: Ms. Kanno (Japan Foundation), Contemporary Art Factory and Rice +.

November 22 - 30, 2003 - WANAKIO festival in Okinawa with BODY CON . Video screenings, BODY CON mobile exhibition curated by Roger McDonald (Minerva Cuevas, Franz West,William Pope L. and others), lounges and Okinawa Gaze project.

December 4, 2003 - ARTISTS TALK by AIT Artist in Residence Marit Lindberg.

January 24, 2004 - MINGLIUS at Tokyo Wondersite. DJs Roger and Kai, visuals by Naoki and Rachel Rosalen. Awamori, herb teas, incense from Kyoto, carpets and cushions. Until 5AM.

THURSDAY FEB 19 - Slide talk series: TONI KLEINLERSCHER, artist and Director of KUSPACE Vienna. Part of AIT's ongoing commitment to spotlight and discuss ideas of the alternative in contemporary art. KUSPACE offers residency and exhibition opportunities for Japanese artists, and operates as an independent, non profit space. Toni introduced KUSPACE within the broad context of alternative movements in Vienna, beginning with the activities of the Secession.

FRIDAY FEB 13 - Artists talk series: FEDERICO HERRERO, painter from Costa Rica, presented recent projects and past works including his pool installation at the 2003 Havana Biennale, Cuba. Federico is currently artist in residence at AIT, supported by The Toyota Foundation. In the AIT Room, Daikanyama. Start: 19:00, one free drink.

'MEDIARENA: Contemporary Japanese Art' opens at The Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, New Plymouth, New Zealand MARCH 13 until June 7. A major exhibition of contemporary Japanese art curated by Greg Burke, Fumio Nanjo and AIT member Roger McDonald. AIT has assisted in preparing for the exhibition.

MONDAY MARCH 1 - Artists Talk series: Sao Paolo based artist Rachel Rosalen presented videos, including new work made in Tokyo during her six month residency supported by The Japan Foundation.

WEDNESDAY MARCH 10 - Artists Talk series: Mumbai based artist Shilpa Gupta presented her recent video and internet based works. Shilpa has shown an online interactive work at Tate Online called Blessed Bandwidth and recently showed an installation at the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum. Shilpa is also involved in alternative artists initiatives such as Aar Paar which has organised art exchanges between India and Pakistan. In the AIT Room, Daikanyama. Start: 19:00, one free drink.

SATURDAY MARCH 27 - MAD MIX and VIDEOS SELECTED BY COMPOSITE (Shunsuke Nanjo, France). An evening of video and mingling in the AIT Room. DJ's Roger and Kai, debut of The Moving Bar (Naoki Kawamoto), food and lots of past and current MAD students. Start 7pm - midnight.

FRIDAY APRIL 2 - Artists Talk series: London based David Blandy who is showing 2 videos in BODY CON (curated by Roger McDonald) introduced video works and discussed his interest in street language and slang. David visited Japan with a grant from The British Council. In 2003 he was selected for the Beck's Student Prize for film and video and has just won the Mostyn Open Award. In the AIT Room, Daikanyama. Start: 19:00, one free drink.

BODY-CON Moving Collection exhibition curated by Roger McDonald was shown as part of the 'Travel' exhibition at UPLINK Gallery, Waseda, Tokyo. Open TUESDAY 13 APRIL - SUNDAY MAY 2. Objects, videos and paintings by 15 artists: Nancy Nisbet, Franz West, Mayumi Kuronuma, Satoru Aoyama, Minerva Cuevas, Muneteru Ujino, William Pope L., Babak Ghazi, Naotaka Shimamoto, Hiroko Okada, Peter McDonald, Lara Baladi, David Blandy, William Cobbing, Saki Satom.

SATURDAY APRIL 24 - MINGLIUS returned for 2004! At UPLINK Gallery as part of BODY-CON. Roger McDonald introduced some of the ideas behind the BODY-CON exhibition, DJ'ing by Roger and Kai (from The Smiths thru' some Goth to Afro-beats and Rabbit in the Moon...), Moving Bar. 8pm - late.

'MEDIARENA: Contemporary Japanese Art' opened at The Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, New Plymouth, New Zealand MARCH 13 until June 7, 2004. A major exhibition of contemporary Japanese art curated by Greg Burke, Fumio Nanjo and AIT member Roger McDonald. AITassisted in preparing for the exhibition.

'AIT Artists Talk, in collaboration with A.R.T.' Ziv Koren (born 1970) is an Israeli photographer and photo-journalist working mainly in Israel. After serving as a military photographer in the Israeli Defence Forces, Ziv has been working for many newspapers and agencies. He is currently a photographer for the French agency Sygma. Ziv has received numerous accolades - in 2000 one of his photographs was chosen as one of two hundred best pictures in the last 45 years by World Press Photo and in the same year he won picture of the year by 'La Express' journal. His photographs have appeared in international newspapers and magazines including Time, Newsweek, Paris Match and El Pais.

This talk accompanied Ziv Koren'exhibition in Tokyo at A.R.T. "Louai Mer'l, A Sergeant, is Going Home". April 27th - June 18th 2004.

'PEANUT CIRCUIT' Friday APRIL 30
     - A lounge night with Danger Museum's directors.
     - A little bit of talking, some screenings, discussion and drinks in an informal atmosphere, with artist collective Danger Museum.

The artist collective Danger Museum started its activities in London in 1998, and now consists of Miho Shimizu (Japan), Øyvind Renberg (Norway) and Tien Wei Woon (Singapore). Their recent works revolve around the art field itself and the relationships between artists, audiences and institutions in different cities. Projects are often developed over long-term research and local collaborations, channelled through exhibitions, publications and the web.

The night round up with music and bar till 23:00. Danger Museum showed videos, slides and objects. This wasDanger Museum's first time to speak about their activity in Japan.

May 26, Artists talk by Dutch sculptor Henk Visch on the occasion of his solo exhibition at Wako Works of Art. Henk introduced his works using slides and funny gestures. In AIT room.

June 7, Artists talk and screening by AIT artist in resident Kyungha Ham from South Korea. Kyungha stayed in Tokyo for 5 weeks, filming in Tokyo and beyond for her new works. Artist in resident apartment, Sumida.

June 11 - 13 - BODY CON, Moving Collection exhibition travelled to Fukui prefecture to be shown at the prefectural museum. A curators talk was given in the gallery, followed by a disco party.

MEDIARENA IN TOKYO' was held at SUPER-DELUXE on the 14th of June. Honey, beauty and tasty, performance: Mediarena artist Kyoko Sawanobori, Screening : REAL-TIME, Mediarena Exhibition: LEN LYE and DJ:Mediarena artist Hiroyuki Matsukage, co-curator Roger McDonald

June 20, AIT participated in a round table forum on independent initiatives in Japan organised by The Contemporary Art Factory, Sumida...also participating were CAS (Osaka), FADS and the Factory.

July 10 - AIT participated in group exhibition at ACC Weimar, Germany. Titled `Even the Moon is not autonomous` and curated by Frank Motz (ACC) and German group Reinegunsgesellschaft, the exhibition showed documents and works by independent spaces and artists dealing with social and political issues. Roger McDonald travelled for the opening and gave lectures in Dresden and Weimar.

July 20 - AIT artist in residence artist talk by Johannes Wohnseifer, who introduced his works on the theme, `Into the Metallic Light`.

July 24 - AIT HOUR MUSEUM 2 at Super Deluxe, Roppongi....a major collaborative action between Johannes Wohnseifer and professional skater Shin Okada. Scale models of famous Tokyo buildings such as Tokyo Tower and Mori Tower were systematically destroyed by Shin flying off ramps, designed by Johannes. DJ Denno and MC Takuto provided sounds....ramps and buildings made by Naoki Kawamoto. DJs Hiroyuki Matsukage, Roger McDonald...rare screening of Mark Gonzales skating action with Johannes Wohnseifer in Germany 1998.

August 27 - 29 - AIT Summer Intensive course. Taught by Keisuke Ozawa and Roger McDonald.

September 25-27 - AIT travelled to Shanghai to take part in alternative networks meeting hosted by BizArt and supported by ASEF.

AIT showed documents at Artspace, Auckland as part of their exhibition Artspaces, September 15 - October 23 2004.

October 6 - President and CEO of Banff Centre Mary Hofstetter gave a talk, moderated by Fumio Nanjo (Deputy Director, Mori Museum). 7pm.

October 22-31 - ASEF (Asia-Europe Cultural Foundation) and AIT co-hosted the 2nd International ART CAMP in Tokyo on the theme of art and new technology. Invited speakers included: Gerfried Stocker, Director ars electronica, Joichi Ito, President Neoteny,Choi Dooeun, Curator Art Centre Nabi, Korea, Machiko Kusahara, Professor Waseda University, Gunalan Nadarajan, Curator and Art Historian Singapore, Tilman Baumgarten, media culture critic Germany, Tapio Meekla, program chair ISEA 2004 Finland, Masaki Fujikata Professor Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, Akihiro Kubota, Professor Tama Art University.

November 27 17:00 - 20:00 AIT Room, Daikanyama - Santiago Cucullu (Argentina) and Camilla Carlsson (Sweden) presented their works and ongoing research from their stay in Japan.

AIT and ARCUS co-hosted a series of artist in resident talks. December 18, 18:00 - 20:30 AIT Room, Daikanyama - Rikke Luther (Denmark) presented her previous activities with group N55 and discussed her recent practices in Japan. Her `Sea Urchin House`, a dome house made from the results of Rikke`s researches into rubbish collection in cardboard is currently in the AIT room.

AIT is featured in the January issue of art magazine `Bijutsu Techo` BT - we were asked to list books which we found useful in starting up.

We collaborate with different groups and individuals to realise our programmes.

Eyesaw - an arts group organised by a group of young international artists and curators who organise exhibitions around Tokyo and run a weekly lounge at Radio:On. Eyesaw recently organised a series of exhibitions and events by San Fransisco based collective MAC.

Radio:On - a club/ lounge space in Gaiemmae, central Tokyo which also runs a radio station. AIT will collaborate with Eyesaw and use this space for lounges and artist/ curator radio shows.

DJ Duck Rock - a DJ and producer who has, amongst others, remixed the John Spencer Blues Explosion. Known for his eclectic, funky mixes which can just as easily incorporate Break Beats as well as Spacemen 3. Recently released his first mix CD 'Sound Republic vol. 2'.

NICAF - Nippon Contemporary Art Fair, the largest contemporary art fair held in Japan. AIT are planning to co-organise a symposium with NICAF on contemporary spaces and art as a lead up event to the Fair in 2003.

SPIRAL ROOM - A space in the Spiral Building, run by Wacoal in Tokyo. many contemporary art exhibitions and events have been held here.

Hillside Forum - A space in the Hillside Terrace complex, designed by Fumihiko Maki, in Daikanyama.

Tokyo Wondersite - An art space in Ochanomizu run by Tokyo City. The space is an old reformed building comprising three floors. This is the first time the City has opened such a contemporary cultural space.

Minato City - a central ward in the city of Tokyo. They let AIT use the gymnasium in Sakuragawa School (disused) for AIT HOUR MUSEUM.

VJ's TEX MEX & Dethqo - design and VJ team who have bought disused vending machines and used them to sell their design items around Tokyo.

POLA - Large cosmetics company that supports contemporary arr through its Foundation and museum in Hakone.

Sumida Kindergarten - occupies the first and second floors of our residency apartment. They have also lent us tables and useful items for events.

REALTOKYO - a great cultural information website in english - updated daily.

WANAKIO - Arts initiative in Naha, Okinawa. AIT may participate in the 2003 event.

KUKI - Club and event promotion team, who have DJ'ed at MINGLIUS. They make good regular club nights in Tokyo.

GROUPS AND SPACES - Website that links worldwide arts collectives, alternative groups, spaces and initiatives.
