AIT
is a not for profit contemporary art platform which
creates a range of programmes and events in Tokyo. It
is the first initiative of its kind to be set up in
Tokyo, where the situation for contemporary art is changing
dramatically with new museum laws and increasing public
interest.
AIT
works to make contemporary art more accessible and relevant
to society through four key areas:
EDUCATION
ARTIST IN RESIDENCE
BI-LINGUAL PUBLICATIONS
PUBLIC ACCESSIBILITY
We operate from a library/ seminar
Room in Daikanyama, Tokyo where we hold classes, lounges
and symposiums.
We offer two apartments in downtown Tokyo as artist
in residencies.
AIT
otherwise keeps its activities un-rooted, working without
a costly infrastructure. We collaborate with other organisations
to make symposiums, club nights, slide talks, curators
talks, and exhibitions in different sites around Tokyo.
AIT
works through a variety of ways: we run educational
courses (MAD) offering four courses (including a one
year Curation course, the first of its kind in Japan),
organise symposiums and slide talks, offer residency
space and support in Tokyo for artists and curators,
curate exhibitions, organise regular parties and lounges,
link art volunteers with projects and publish bi-lingual
materials about contemporary art from Japan, including
a quarterly newsletter. All of these activities are
needed now in Tokyo. Our aim is to develop these activities
professionally, within an international context.
Funding
and Support.
AIT is an officially registered non-profit organisation
(NPO) from The City of Tokyo. As such we must abide
by the guidelines set for NPO's. We operate through
several sources of funds - fees from educational programmes,
symposiums and sales from booklets, fees from the artist-in-residence
programme (through foreign cultural foundations and
institutions), a yearly individual supporters scheme
and business patronage.
Supporters
Programme.
The aim of this programme is to create greater public
access to contemporary art and contribute towards the
running of AIT. The scheme will be offered on a yearly
basis. Supporters fees are set at \5000, \10,000, \200,000
and \500,00 for individual and corporate supporters
respectively. Supporters benefits are listed below:
Receive AIT newsletter four times a year, receive on
the spot art information regularly via e-mail, Free
admission to AIT talks and symposiums, Free admission
to AIT parties and lounges, Use of AIT Room and access
to our library of catalogues and magazines (by appointment).
